VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

EMERGENCY SHELTERS

Volunteering in any of our emergency shelters is easy. For availability contact the program coordinator at your shelter of preference.

Teens and children are welcome to volunteer to cook and/or serve. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult. This is a wonderful way to volunteer as a family.

If you belong to a corporation, a church, or want your whole family to come with you, please contact us at: ocvolunteers@elp.rr.com

FOOD SHARE COMMITTEE

The Food Share Committee coordinates various groups within the community who wish to serve and/or provide meals to the homeless.

Volunteers can contact this committee to sign up for a date to serve lunch or dinner or both meals to our homeless.

Groups can choose to provide food or serve food prepared at the Opportunity Center. This program is a huge help in ensuring our homeless have warm, nutritious meals and is a wonderful way for community members to share a meal with the homeless!

If you are interested in helping with a meal, please take a look at our calendar page to see which days you could fit in and chose a date.

Another opportunity to get involved with feeding the homeless is to help stock our food pantry. The pantry is always in need of the following items: staple items (flour, oil, rice, sugar, etc.), meat, coffee, canned goods (tomatoes, vegetables, etc.)

Let us fill all of the empty plates!

CENTER FOR PEACE

For many of our homeless neighbors, the Center for Peace creates a temporary oasis from the harsh realities of life and offers an environment of compassion, warmth, and hospitality. It’s a place where someone can find a moment to reflect, regain inner strength, meditate and renew their sense of self and purpose in life. The Center is always in need of volunteers that help lift souls and nourish the spirit of those seeking to cope with their vulnerability. By grace-and in exchange, a volunteer and a homeless neighbor can together receive life-transforming experiences.

Sister Helen Santamaria, S.L., a Creighton University graduate in Spiritual Direction, coordinates the inter-denominational sanctuary and welcomes anybody wanting to celebrate a higher presence in their life.

Volunteers in this program may also choose to participate as members of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) which consist of men and women who are retired but who still desire to serve and reflect on their service in prayer, community, and spiritual reflection. IVC volunteers commit to an additional monthly meeting for prayer, conversation, and discernment of God’s activity in their lives of service.

Requirement: Must have a desire to serve “the least of my brothers and sisters.”

Time Commitment:  two hours of service a month.

Here at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless, the work we accomplish would be impossible without the generous support of our community. From individual volunteers to church congregations, we are grateful for the consistent support we receive. Are you part of a local congregation? Would you like to know how your church, small group, Bible Study class, or youth group could be involved? There are several ways to help us! We would love the opportunity to talk with you.
